R. Ryan Byrne

Dr. R. Ryan Byrne is board certified in gastroenterology & hepatology and internal medicine. He joins Gastro Center of Maryland in Riverdale, Silver Spring, and Bethesda, after 12 years of service as a U.S. Air Force physician, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, he had the honor of caring for active duty service members, their families, and veterans. He is passionate about providing exceptional patient care, guided by the belief that achieving patient goals requires compassionate and collaborative care based on the latest evidence-based medicine.

Dr. Byrne was born and raised in the Chicago area. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He began his active duty service in San Antonio, Texas, where he completed his internal medicine residency at Brooke Army Medical Center, the Department of Defense's largest hospital. He then served for three years as an internist and medical director at RAF Lakenheath in England, before returning to Brooke Army Medical Center to complete a fellowship in gastroenterology and join the faculty. He also deployed to Qatar in support of U.S. and coalition forces.

Dr. Byrne was drawn to gastroenterology by its wide range of conditions and the opportunity to perform endoscopic procedures. Some of his clinical interests include colon cancer screening and surveillance, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux, and liver diseases.

In his free time, Dr. Byrne loves traveling, playing golf, and attending concerts and sporting events.
