What is an upper endoscopy?

An upper endoscopy is a procedure that is used to diagnose and treat problems in the upper digestive tract. A long, thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end is inserted into the patient's mouth, down their throat, and into the esophagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine.

Causes of upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as tumors, masses, ulcers, or inflammation can be seen during this procedure. In some cases, the doctor passes instruments through the long tube in order to take tissue samples or cauterize areas that are bleeding. Endoscopy is generally done under sedation to ensure the patient is comfortable through the procedure.
